What is bouldering? š¤
Bouldering is, simply put, climbing without the need for ropes or harnesses. The walls are lower, around 3 meters tall, and thereās a mat beneath to cushion your fall. When bouldering outdoors, we use a crash pad, which is a portable mat placed under the boulder problem to protect against falls.
Bouldering offers many benefits:
- Itās great for building upper body and finger strength, while still engaging all muscle groups.
- It emphasizes the mind-body connection, as youāll need to figure out the easiest and most logical way to reach the top and then execute it.
- Itās a very social sport; itās common to see people encouraging one another and celebrating achievements together.
What should I expect on my first visit? š¤
If youāre going to a climbing gym for the first time, the most important thing is to have fun and feel safe. For many, bouldering is a chance to unwind, have fun, and hang out with friends.
How often you climb and how many times you visit the gym in a week doesnāt matter unless you set specific goals (e.g., āI want to climb my first 6B by the end of the yearā). The most important thing is to enjoy yourself and have fun with the process.
Bouldering is for anyone who wants to try it. Thereās always a climb that will suit you, regardless of your physique, fitness level, age, or other factors. After all, everyone has to start somewhere, and thereās always room for improvement.
What do I need for climbing? š¤
For bouldering in a gym, you only need two things: climbing shoes and chalk. Climbing shoes are special footwear that helps you climb and grip the footholds more effectively, while chalk is used on your hands to improve grip.
For beginners, climbing shoes can be rented at our facility, and we also offer chalk for purchase. Itās helpful to have chalk in a dedicated chalk bag, which you can take with you to the wall.
Most importantly, bring good vibes and a sense of humor.
What is a boulder problem? š¤
In the gym route setters design a certain number of new routes (boulders) every week. Each route consists of holds in the same color that lead to the top. This is referred to as a boulder problem. Each boulder problem has a marked start and finish.
The general rules of bouldering are as follows:
- To successfully complete a climb, you must reach the top of the boulder problem using holds of the same color.
- You must start on the designated starting holds and finish on the marked finishing hold.
- Climbers can skip holds if they choose (thereās no requirement to grab every hold) and can experiment with different movement combinations (this is called trying different beta).
Sometimes you might hear the urban myth that you need to hold the final hold for 3 seconds before triumphantly dropping onto the soft mats and bragging about your success. In reality, you just need to finish stably on the marked final holdāthree seconds more or less doesnāt matter. If you manage to solve the boulder problem on your first attempt, itās called a āflash.ā In that case, itās clear you should challenge yourself with a harder climb. If you flash an extremely difficult boulder problem, you owe your fellow climbers a celebratory drink.
What are boulder problem grades? š¤
Boulders are graded according to their difficulty. Climbing gyms worldwide use various grading systems. At Scena, we use a color-coded system. The grades range from very easy to extremely difficult.
In Slovenia, the Fontainebleau grading scale is commonly used. It starts at 1 (though youāll rarely find boulders graded lower than 3) and goes up indefinitely. Each number is further divided into A, B, and C, with additional ā+ā grades. For example: 3, 4A, 4B, 4C, 5A, 5B, 5C+, 6A, 6B, etc. A ā+ā indicates that the grade is slightly harder than, say, 5C, but not as difficult as 6A.
In the U.S., the V-scale is used, starting at V0. The hardest boulder climbed to date is graded V17 or. 9A. Plus grades (e.g., V4+) indicate that a boulder is harder than the lower grade but easier than the next.
Whatās the difference between bouldering and sport climbing? š¤
The difference lies in the height of the wall and the method of protection. Sport climbing uses ropes, harnesses, and quickdraws to secure the rope, which can be clipped either while leading or from an anchored top rope.
Sport climbing often requires endurance, while bouldering places a stronger emphasis on coordination.
